Certified Self-Contained Campervans in New Zealand

Change is good. Change is fun. The Spaceships New Zealand fleet has been extended and self-contained campervans have been added. Now you can explore the outer space of New Zealand in a certified self-contained Spaceships campervan. All features that are required have been fitted to this new campervan category.

The self-contained campervans are fully compliant with the current requirements for being certified self-contained. They have been checked and approved so come with paperwork to show they are certified self-contained, which is according to the Blue Warrant certification rules until 7 December 2024 and according to the Green Warrant rules from 7 December 2024 onwards. When you book a Certified Self-Contained campervan at Spaceships, you will always get a Certified Self-Contained campervan at pick-up.

Changes to the Self-Contained rules in New Zealand (spoiler alert: no impact for you)

There are new self-containment certification rules on the block for self-contained vehicles called the 'Green Warrant' from 7 December 2024 for rental vehicles. The biggest difference is that this warrant requires vehicles to have a fixed toilet, as opposed to the portable toilets permitted under the current 'Blue Warrant'.

Here's how this epic tale unfolds for your adventure with us:

• If you've booked a self-contained Spaceships campervan that carries a Blue Warrant, there's no need for any pit stops. You're still free to roam and camp across local authority lands – approved campsites for self-contained campervans - until the warrant expires (7 December 2024). And of course, all campsites or holiday parks with facilities.
• If you're steering a non-self-contained Spaceships campervan, we've got you covered too! You're always able to pitch your mobile abode on council, Department of Conservation (DOC), and commercial campsites – holiday parks - with basic facilities. So, you can enjoy the enchanting NZ night sky, cook up a meal, and unwind to the sound of nature.

Both self-contained and non-self-contained campsites can be found via the recommended free camping & road trip app. It has all campsites listed, so there are 1000s of options to stay at free and budget campsites that suit your campervan category: self-contained vs non-self-contained.

When the time comes, 7 December 2024, our self-contained vehicles will evolve to meet the Green Warrant requirements, equipped with a fixed toilet.

• 24/7 Roadside Assistance: All Spaceships campervans are registered with New Zealand Roadside Assistance “NZRA” 24-hour roadside service. This covers all mechanical faults that could happen while roadtripping in New Zealand. • Young drivers welcome: anyone over the age of 18 with a valid driving licence can hire and drive a Spaceships campervan. No extra fees for young drivers and the same low excess. Or use our All-Inclusive insurance option to get the best campervan cover for your road trip and to reduce the excess and bond to zero dollars.
• Add additional driver(s) for free: your road trip will be more fun and more relaxing when travelling with like-minded travellers. Whether you're travelling as a couple, family or group of friends, any one of your road trip crew can be added as an additional driver. Free of charge, of course. We don't have any hidden charges.
• Travel guide books & free camping app: all info to help you to explore the highlights of New Zealand are included with your NZ campervan hire. Free of charge of course. Our guidebooks and app will show you more than just the standard highlights. These items are the best way to get off the beaten path.
• Free after-hours pick-up and drop-off: you can pick up your New Zealand campervan 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Even if our depots are closed you can still pick up your campervan. Just make sure to select your preferred pick-up time when booking your campervan online. The same goes for returning your campervan, after-hours is a free service at Spaceships.
• Transfer Credit to get to our depot when booking for 28 days or more (on bookings made on or after 1 July 2024), making the transfer process as easy and flexible as possible.

• Free to change your travel dates: It doesn't matter what the reason is to change your travel dates, you can always update your booking for free at Spaceships. We don't charge any fees to make changes to your booking. Although there might be a price change in the daily price of your booking (lower or higher) as prices are different for every day of the year. But there will never be a fee to make changes to your booking.
• Clean and safe vehicles that are all well-maintained and services every 15,000km by our in-house team of mechanics.

Advantages of non-self-contained campervans

The classic Spaceships New Zealand fleet isn't self-contained, but we also have self-contained campervans (more about that later). Our non-self-contained campervans don’t have a shower or toilet on board. Campervans in the Spaceships classic fleet are compact campervans that come with heaps of awesome features, like all sleeping & cooking gear. Our free camping app will show you where to find these campsites. Heaps of them are in remote locations or areas outside the city and towns.
